am grateful to Chris Doig, Jerry Hoogerwerf, Les Horvath, Tony Sabino, Al Santilli, and Ray Smith—the six living persons profiled in these pages—for consenting to be interviewed and for sharing their stories with me. Tony Sabino's sons Tony, Jr. and Paul, his daughter-in-law Jamie Sabino, and his friend Sam Whiteside were also helpful. To learn more about the three persons no longer with us, I turned to their families and friends: Charlie Boyd's old friend Fred Duran and his step-daughter-in-law Mary Lou Montgomery; Bill Bullock's widow Judy and his son David; John Myers' sons Chuck and Dow and his widow June. All of these people kindly shared their recollections with me.

Mark Sellers flew me in his lovely Bellanca to visit with Bob Buck in Vermont. There Bob talked about his remarkable career, critiqued my manuscript, and introduced me to a most helpful writer, Kitty Werner, who provided a lot of sound advice on forming one's own publishing company.

Jerry Hoogerwerf, Jeff Nye, and Keith Richards read drafts of the book and provided useful advice. I thank them for that. People kind enough to provide an assortment of facts include Betsy Hershberg, Tom Knauff, Nancy Malmed, Joe O'Neill, Judy Ruprecht, and Tom Stowers.

This book is, in some ways, a family affair. My daughter Caroline Eisenhood checked facts and transcribed all of my interviews (plus two that she conducted herself). My son Adam served as both editor and designer. If the book looks good and reads well, it's because of his efforts. I thank my wife Joanne for her consistent encouragement and for sharing the sky with me on numerous occasions in both gliders and airplanes, including a couple of memorable transcontinental flights in four-seaters.
